Also known as spot baldness, Alopecia Areata is a condition where hair falls out in small patches, around the size of a coin. It is an autoimmune disease that causes non-scarring hair loss in a few or multiple areas of the scalp, face or body. Sometimes, Alopecia Areata can lead to complete loss of hair on the scalp, or in extreme cases, the entire body. Often developing suddenly, over the course of just a few days, the condition is known to affect a person of any age or gender, though mostly it is seen in those under the age of 30. Mainly caused due to genetic composition, the condition occurs when white blood cells attack the cells in the hair follicles, causing them to shrink and slow down hair production. Despite the common perception, there is very little scientific information to support the view that Alopecia Areata is caused by stress. Although, extreme cases of stress could potentially trigger the condition in those who are at risk. CAUSES & RISK FACTORS: Family history Environmental triggers Other autoimmune disorders
