Mouth Ulcers are small, painful lesions that develop in the mouth or at the base of the gums. Mouth Ulcers are common and clear up on their own within a week or two. They can make eating, drinking and talking uncomfortable. Mouth ulcers are non-contagious and sometimes can be triggered by uncontrollable situations like hormonal changes, inflammatory bowel disease, certain medications or even smoking. CAUSES & RISK FACTORS: Injury or trauma: Accidental biting of the cheek, tongue, or lip, or irritation from sharp dental appliances like braces or dentures can cause mouth ulcers. Oral hygiene: Poor oral hygiene, including inadequate brushing or flossing, can lead to the development of mouth ulcers. Viral or bacterial infections: Some viral and bacterial infections can trigger the formation of mouth ulcers. These include herpes simplex virus (HSV), which causes cold sores, and Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium associated with stomach ulcers. Autoimmune conditions: Certain autoimmune disorders, such as Behcet's disease, lupus, or inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis), can increase the risk of developing mouth ulcers. Hormonal changes: Some individuals may experience mouth ulcers during hormonal changes, such as during menstruation or pregnancy.
